This was a back-of-house room in a commercial building, with a concrete floor and walls that take a beating from carts, mops and cleaning. We tiled most of the way up the walls in a large glossy white tile laid in a running bond and finished the bottom with a band of black tile where the wall meets the floor.
Tile is the right finish here because it can be scrubbed and wet-mopped every day without wearing through the way paint does, and a tile base holds up to mop water where a glued-on vinyl base can peel. The glossy face reflects the overhead light around the room. The tile is cut neatly around the door frame and an outlet, and the joints are grouted and cleaned.
What we did
- Tiled the lower walls in large glossy white tile in a running bond
- Set a black tile base along the floor
- Cut tile around the door frame and a wall outlet
- Grouted and cleaned the finished tile
