This deck sits a full story above the yard off the back of the house. The railing is a white vinyl system with black aluminum balusters. The white posts and rails match the house trim, and the thin black balusters are much easier to see past than wide wood pickets, so the view of the yard and the trees stays open from a chair.
On an elevated deck the railing is the part that keeps people safe, so the posts need a solid connection to the deck framing, not just to the boards. The finish is low upkeep as well: the tan decking and the vinyl and aluminum rail need an occasional wash rather than staining or sealing every couple of years the way a wood rail does.
What we did
- White vinyl railing posts and rails around the deck perimeter
- Black aluminum balusters between the rails
- Rail sections run continuously along the long side and around the corners
- Tan composite-look deck boards on an elevated frame
