This shower uses a long marble-look subway tile with strong blue-gray veining, laid in a running bond on all three walls. A tile this busy needs some care in the layout: the veining changes from piece to piece, so it pays to mix tiles from several boxes as you set them and keep any one patch of wall from looking repetitive or lopsided.
The niche is recessed into the back wall and split into two compartments by a center shelf. Its back is a plain white penny tile, which calms things down against the veined walls, and the edges are finished in brushed gold metal trim to match the fixtures. Glass corner shelves add more storage without cutting another opening into the wall.
The hand shower and valve trim are brushed gold. Matching the niche trim to the fixture finish is a small decision, but it makes the shower look planned as a whole rather than pieced together from parts. Metal edge trim also protects the cut edges of the tile around the niche, which would otherwise be the first place to chip.
