This room under a drop ceiling got a new floor and trim package. Gray-toned wood-look vinyl plank went down wall to wall, and new white baseboard and chair rail were installed against walls painted gray. The white trim against the gray walls gives the room crisp lines without adding any extra color. Under fluorescent panel lighting, the gray floor and walls keep the room from looking washed out or yellow.
Chair rail does practical work in a room that sees chairs and furniture: it takes the knocks that would otherwise dent drywall, and it breaks a plain wall into better proportions. The close-up shows the detail that makes trim look right, with the baseboard and chair rail fitted to the door casing and both running level around the corners. Small gaps at those joints are what usually give away rushed trim work.
